Each time control of the island shifted from one nation to another, it was rebranded under a new identity.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7yLdi14L4vo/WxIqGsRP-SI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/7h98na3cAyQRpxA4cTjLuuUtmKSSNLRSQCLcBGAs/s1600/Mauritius%2BMap.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="464" data-original-width="500" height="296" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7yLdi14L4vo/WxIqGsRP-SI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/7h98na3cAyQRpxA4cTjLuuUtmKSSNLRSQCLcBGAs/s320/Mauritius%2BMap.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Arabic</b><br />
Though they never settled Mauritius, <a href="http://www.mauritiusencyclopedia.com/History/Arabs.htm" target="_blank">Arabic sailors bestowed a few different names</a> on the island; Dina Margabin, Dina Robin, Dina Arobi/Harab. The names can be translated, among others, as Square Isle, Desert Isle, or Abandoned Isle.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<b>Portuguese</b><br />
Portugal's primary involvement with the island was from the late 16th Century to the early 17th Century. Though they <a href="http://www.mauritius-holidays-discovery.com/discovery-of-mauritius.html" target="_blank">never created a permanent settlement</a>, Portuguese maps from this time show the island marked as "Cirne"(Swan Island).<br />
<br />
<b>Dutch</b><br />
The Dutch settled <a href="https://www.hsu.edu/academicforum/2000-2001/2000-1afIndians%20in%20Mauritius%20and%20Fiji.pdf" target="_blank">Mauritius</a> in 1658 and gifted the island (temporarily) with its modern name, in honor of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Maurice-stadholder-of-The-Netherlands" target="_blank">Maurice, Prince of Orange</a>. In less than a century, the Dutch abandoned their settlement. (It was during this period that the island's <a href="http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20160408-how-humanity-first-killed-the-dodo-then-lost-it-as-well" target="_blank">dodo bird </a>went extinct.)<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>French and British</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 1715, just five years after being abandoned by the Dutch, France claimed the island and renamed it the Isle of France. A common theme of European history is <a href="https://www.historyguy.com/anglo_french.html#.WxIs--4vzIU" target="_blank">Britain and France fighting over, well, pretty much anything</a>. By the early 19th Century, this led to British control of island and restoration of the name, "Mauritius" (This time for good.)</div>

<i><br /></i>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zspj-_ZuHCQ/WxCz1zsV8MI/AAAAAAAAA4M/JaQqA0GbJZwd0gJLXKmtGaCf7KrdjtH6ACLcBGAs/s1600/Kyrgyzstan%2Bflag.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="750" height="192" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zspj-_ZuHCQ/WxCz1zsV8MI/AAAAAAAAA4M/JaQqA0GbJZwd0gJLXKmtGaCf7KrdjtH6ACLcBGAs/s320/Kyrgyzstan%2Bflag.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<b><br /></b>
<b>Sun Rays</b><br />
Forty yellow rays swirl around the center of Kyrgyzstan's flag. Contrasted against a vibrant red field, the rays symbolize the forty tribes unified under <a href="http://www.silkroadfoundation.org/folklore/manas/manasintro.html" target="_blank">Manas</a>. The red field represents the red banner Manas carried into battle.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><b>The Tent</b><br />
The center of Kyrgyzstan's flag features a yellow disk crossed by multiple red stripes. The unique pattern displays one of Central Asia's foremost traits - a <a href="https://silkroadexplore.com/blog/yurt-camping-in-central-asia/" target="_blank">yurt</a>. The nomadic cultures that roamed the region's great <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/steppe/" target="_blank">steppes</a> and plains relied on these large mobile tents to follow their herd's seasonal migration patterns.<br />
<br />
<b>Conclusion</b><br />
Combining past legends and focusing on a shared culture, Kyrgyzstan's flag promotes unity at every opportunity. The image of the <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/yurt/" target="_blank">yurt</a> evokes unified families and unified tribes, as well as the pasts' unity with nation's present day nomadic peoples. Just as the legend of Manas serves as the backdrop of <a href="https://www.kgembassy.org/en/about-kyrgyzstan/history/" target="_blank">Kyrgyzstan's history</a>, so does his red banner serve as the flag's backdrop. And the golden rays dancing in the center of the flag encourage its modern-day citizens to reflect on the nation's strength when all of its people are united.<br />

<b>Independence</b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On September 1, 1991, <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/asia/uzbekistan-best-things-to-do-see-buy-why-go-silk-road-deserts-vodka-a8351501.html" target="_blank">Uzbekistan</a> declared its freedom from the Soviet Union - a full three months before the USSR collapsed. The newly independent nation then became the first Central Asian country to absolve itself of <a href="https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/su-uz.html" target="_blank">the old Soviet symbols</a> and adopted a new flag.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><b>Crescent</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finding a crescent moon adorned on <a href="https://fotw.info/flags/uz.html" target="_blank">the nation's flag</a> lacks surprise - nearly 90% of all Uzbeks practice the Islamic faith. However, the given reason for the crescent moon is that it represents the nation's post-Soviet rebirth.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Stars</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://photius.com/flags/stars.html" target="_blank">Star-spangled flags are also common</a>, but <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/03/opinion/independence-day-for-a-scared-nation.html" target="_blank">Uzbekistan's</a> twelve stars may not represent something as mundane as the number of states/districts (Uzbekistan does consist of twelve districts.) Instead, many propose those twinkling across Uzbekistan's banner represent the twelve months and constellations of the Uzbek calendar. </div>

<br />
Just how big is Texas? The team at <a href="https://www.sparefoot.com/moving/" target="_blank">SpareFoot</a> wants us to see the answer for ourselves. They used <a href="http://thetruesize.com/">thetruesize.com</a> (<a href="http://www.somethinggeography.com/2017/01/check-this-out-new-feature.html%20Done" target="_blank">previously featured on Check This Out</a>) to help create <a href="https://www.sparefoot.com/moving/moving-to-dallas-tx/how-big-is-texas/" target="_blank">this infographic</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O4v3IvxLG4A/WdGPIlzINSI/AAAAAAAAAlo/wUnrAQRDODUVBUq9h-67hhzEhLBMlTfYACLcBGAs/s1600/SG%2BHow%2BBig%2Bis%2BTexas.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="639" data-original-width="1364" height="297" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O4v3IvxLG4A/WdGPIlzINSI/AAAAAAAAAlo/wUnrAQRDODUVBUq9h-67hhzEhLBMlTfYACLcBGAs/s640/SG%2BHow%2BBig%2Bis%2BTexas.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
Along with visually comparing Texas with other nations, Sparefoot's infographic also compares square miles, population, and GDP. Spoiler alert: Texas is very big and very wealthy. Don't mess with it.<br />

<b>The Smallest Continent</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While it is easy to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWuXlhcN9Mc" target="_blank">mistake</a> Australia for a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POJtaO2xB_o" target="_blank">"small"</a> continent*, answer choice A is the closest to mainland Australia's true size. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNJKWVmK-GM" target="_blank">Australia</a> is the smallest continent, but a continent nonetheless. Aside from its position as the "smallest" continent, another reason it is easy to underestimate Australia's size is due to its location. Placed below the massiveness that is Asia, any continent would appear small and because <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlDXZywedvc" target="_blank">Australia</a> does not touch any other continents, a viewer's eyes are not immediately drawn to a comparison. The only other continent that is near Australia is Antarctica, but most maps heavily distort that frozen landmass and basically make a fair comparison impossible. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>A Large Nation</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a continent, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2AC41dglnM" target="_blank">Australia</a> may be "small", but in terms of nations it is the 6th largest. It is slightly smaller than <a href="http://www.somethinggeography.com/2016/06/sao-paulo-big-bustling-and-diverse.html%20Done" target="_blank">Brazil</a>, but more than twice the size of the world's 7th largest country, India. </div>

Any idea what the following image is?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Is it a country? a body of water? What if you were given choices?<br />
<br />
Is it...<br />
a) The Black Sea<br />
b) Lake Victoria<br />
c) China<br />
d) Australia<br />
e) Antarctica<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="text-align: justify;">Maps can provide information in ways that can be </span>underappreciated<span style="text-align: justify;">. A typical map instantly shows a size comparison between places, distinguishes between nations and bodies of water, shows viewers one place's location in relation to another, and displays these places with their northern regions on top of the map.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But what if all of those advantages were taken away? Could you still label the following places? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zVWKEBPyWZA/Wo3RU-UGMsI/AAAAAAAAA1Y/H1OXNR8zg3oMGvrz17B3aVpBNltHdkgBQCEwYBhgL/s1600/SG%2BAustrlia%2BBlank%2BUpside%2Bdown.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="645" data-original-width="847" height="243" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zVWKEBPyWZA/Wo3RU-UGMsI/AAAAAAAAA1Y/H1OXNR8zg3oMGvrz17B3aVpBNltHdkgBQCEwYBhgL/s320/SG%2BAustrlia%2BBlank%2BUpside%2Bdown.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The image above is mainland Australia. Taken away from their surroundings, locations can become much harder to label. Also, the above image is "upside-down" because the southern portion was placed at the top. Look at the north-side-up image below and see if Australia looks more familiar.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Is the above location...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
a) The Black Sea</div>

It is mainland China turned sideways. Below is a more traditional view:</div>

<b>Conclusion</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is amazing how much maps can spoil us. Even those who can easily point out China or Australia on a globe likely had at least a little trouble identifying them. As they say, context is everything.</div>

<i>Where on Earth is the <a href="https://imgflip.com/i/do9y7" target="_blank">equator</a>? If given a blank world <a href="https://www.memecenter.com/fun/96176/Video-Game-World-Map" target="_blank">map</a>, could you draw a line that closely followed the equator? Let's find out.</i></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
</div>
<div>
<b>Africa</b><br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lpgwfzTbcOI/WmEnKyjjmAI/AAAAAAAAAzo/cT7zPDZXqwkOMNqsiGqsv6ULO3VNjYqCgCLcBGAs/s1600/Africa%2BGoogle%2BEarth.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="1307" height="312" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lpgwfzTbcOI/WmEnKyjjmAI/AAAAAAAAAzo/cT7zPDZXqwkOMNqsiGqsv6ULO3VNjYqCgCLcBGAs/s640/Africa%2BGoogle%2BEarth.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let's start with Africa first. Look at the image above. Where do you think the equator belongs? Africa is <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2445615/True-size-Africa-continent-big-China-India-US-Europe-together.html" target="_blank">a large continent</a> so let's add some choices. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v1R4-BDwuOM/WmEpQcvzMbI/AAAAAAAAAz0/O9lmagOr7uYEN2bUsGY9rQTmamdXUNskwCLcBGAs/s1600/where%2Bis%2Bthe%2Bequator.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="877" height="466" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v1R4-BDwuOM/WmEpQcvzMbI/AAAAAAAAAz0/O9lmagOr7uYEN2bUsGY9rQTmamdXUNskwCLcBGAs/s640/where%2Bis%2Bthe%2Bequator.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Did your <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ72bYyEtBg" target="_blank">imaginary</a> line come close to any of the four above? Which one do you think is closest to the equator?</div>
</div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you chose C, you were correct.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTSLRbm8L9E" target="_blank">Americas</a></b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, we journey to Central & <a href="https://imgur.com/MABzdMx" target="_blank">South America</a>. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uxEuClbk3jM/WmE3W5N6ZEI/AAAAAAAAA0E/Gn_mkwQz6ygIk28YoHcpOFHg5sJAV4TQwCLcBGAs/s1600/Latin%2BAmerica%2BMap.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="638" data-original-width="870" height="468" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uxEuClbk3jM/WmE3W5N6ZEI/AAAAAAAAA0E/Gn_mkwQz6ygIk28YoHcpOFHg5sJAV4TQwCLcBGAs/s640/Latin%2BAmerica%2BMap.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Take a look at the above image and once again <a href="https://youtu.be/CauI0oPGNlE?t=4m30s" target="_blank">draw</a> an imaginary equator. Is it close to any of the choices below?</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RoFAuthVS6w/WmE5xscM4VI/AAAAAAAAA0c/PVUH6cl0yR4AnGr_T8RTgO2Rr5yzVJ5WgCLcBGAs/s1600/South%2BAmerica%2BEquator%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="870" height="470" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RoFAuthVS6w/WmE5xscM4VI/AAAAAAAAA0c/PVUH6cl0yR4AnGr_T8RTgO2Rr5yzVJ5WgCLcBGAs/s640/South%2BAmerica%2BEquator%2B2.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Which line is closest to your imaginary line?</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If your line was closest to C, you nailed it.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Asia</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One last <a href="http://www.collegehumor.com/post/6832263/draw-a-plant-cell" target="_blank">test</a>.</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fn1MObIXiq0/WmE7KWapqSI/AAAAAAAAA0o/X0blA-IarRwl4WXg0XEkLutlcDkvLfDXwCLcBGAs/s1600/Asia%2BMap.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="635" data-original-width="835" height="486" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fn1MObIXiq0/WmE7KWapqSI/AAAAAAAAA0o/X0blA-IarRwl4WXg0XEkLutlcDkvLfDXwCLcBGAs/s640/Asia%2BMap.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Asia is obviously the <a href="http://brilliantmaps.com/population-circle/" target="_blank">largest</a> continent. The whole continent doesn't even fit in this image. Let's draw one last imaginary equator and see how close we can get. Is your line close to any of the lines below?</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B-uQApzzj5o/WmE9T-ixK1I/AAAAAAAAA00/9D8V7YZf6P0FnawtZSdbg6Qxoh0VDF2xgCLcBGAs/s1600/Asia%2Bequator%2Bmap.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="603" data-original-width="794" height="486" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B-uQApzzj5o/WmE9T-ixK1I/AAAAAAAAA00/9D8V7YZf6P0FnawtZSdbg6Qxoh0VDF2xgCLcBGAs/s640/Asia%2Bequator%2Bmap.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Was your line closest to A, B, C, or D? </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If it was closest to D, you got it!</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Conclusion</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Were you able to get close on all three? Congrats if you were. That shows some pretty skillful mental map <a href="http://www.lolzhumor.com/smart-thinking/" target="_blank">skills</a>. For those of you who weren't as skillful or as good at guessing, don't <a href="https://9gag.com/gag/6546603/men-dont-cry-sniff-they-sweat-through-their-eyes" target="_blank">sweat</a> it. Identifying what we don't know is often the biggest key to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmvt7yFTtt8" target="_blank">learning</a>.</div>

On January 4, 2018, a powerful winter storm battered the eastern United States. Clouds in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico basically outlined the U.S. and eastern Mexico.</div>

<br />
<a href="https://www.timemaps.com/history/" target="_blank">TimeMaps</a> is a great site to nerd-out on. The Atlas page presents users with a list of dates to choose from. Select the date to see what national borders looked like at the time. You can specify the continent and region and you can also hover your mouse over certain locations to read a brief summary of what was happening at the time.<br />

The site also contains an encyclopedia and a blog. You really have to visit <a href="https://www.timemaps.com/history/" target="_blank">TimeMaps</a> to truly appreciate how awesome it is. Check it out.<br />
